Structural Steel vs. Miscellaneous Metals: What’s the Difference?

These two terms get used loosely, but on a construction drawing set they mean different scopes of work — and knowing which one you actually need affects both your quote and your timeline.

Structural Steel

This is the load-bearing skeleton: columns, beams, joists and their connections. It requires engineered shop drawings, is inspected as part of the building's structural sign-off, and typically has to be substantially complete before other trades can proceed — framing, drywall and finishes all depend on it being in place.

Miscellaneous Metals

This covers everything else metal that isn't part of the primary structure: stairs, guardrails, handrails, ladders, gates, and architectural metal features. It's usually installed later in the schedule and, while it still needs to meet code (particularly for guards and handrails), it doesn't carry the same structural engineering requirements as the building's frame.

Why the Distinction Matters for Your Quote

A quote request that clearly separates the two lets a fabricator scope engineering time accurately — structural steel needs a stamped engineer's review before fabrication starts; most miscellaneous metals work doesn't. Bundling them together in a vague request usually means a slower, less accurate first quote.
